The ceremony took place at Sequoit Park in Antioch and by the start time of 7pm, a crowd of easily 1500 people gathered. It was an evening unified by faith, family and freedom.

The ceremony was opened with a prayer. Lake Villa Township Chairman John Muellner recognized Kirk’s dedication to free speech and open debate. He spoke of Kirk’s decency, love for other people and commitment to free speech.

Kirk was an Illinois native who grew up in Arlington Heights. He founded Turning Point USA which grew into an influential organization that raised money and mobilized conservative activism. Kirk was known for his “Prove Me Wrong” open debates on college campuses where he invited people who disagreed with him to engage in debate.

Kirk was shot on September 10th at Utah Valley University in Orem Utah. Tyler Robinson, 22, of Washington Utah has been charged with the shooting. Investigators say Robinson acted alone and at this point, an exact motive has not been stated and remains under investigation.
