The Volo Museum has officially re-opened its military museum after a long awaited expansion. It serves as a tribute to all who served and provides a unique immersive experience into military history and evolution.
The facility is one of the oldest buildings on the property. It was built in the late 1800s and once housed a chicken coop. With the renovation, 3000 square feet of space has been added.
The exhibits feature period correct displays full of sight and sound. The designers well captured the mood of battle with tanks, personnel carriers and weapons. The military museum also takes visitors through a series of chronologically arranged static displays corresponding to battle theaters throughout our history.
“We not only wanted to create an immersive experience—we wanted to pay tribute to all of the men and women who have served our country, with a visual story that helps people understand the depth of their sacrifice,” said Brian Grams, Museum Director.
The military museum held its grand re-opening during Memorial Day weekend.
From May 24 to June 6, the museum is waiving the fee entirely, allowing all guests with a Platinum Pass, Gold Pass, or general museum admission to experience the Military Museum for free. As always, children ages four and under are free as well as active duty military and veterans. After the 6th, entry will cost a $5 token to cover the costs of the renovation. It is well worth it. Having a museum such as this right in our own backyard and at a very small cost adds to the rich tapestry that is Lake County.
“The Grams family really spared no expense,” said Jim Wojdyla, Volo Museum Marketing Director. “What began as simple updates turned into one of the most ambitious expansions in our history. Although a few finishing touches are still underway, we couldn’t wait to share it. The response from our team and guests who previewed it has been overwhelming.”
