Early in the morning, Lake County Canine Dax took down an armed felon who jumped out of a second floor window in effort to flee.

According to police, a call was placed for a fight in progress at a motel in the 39000 block of North Sheridan Road in Zion. Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they knocked on the door of the motel room where the incident was occurring. According to police, Ricardo Perez, of the 400 block of Hickory Street in Mundelein, who was armed with a pistol, jumped out of the second floor window and fled.

Other deputies set up a perimeter. Also arriving on scene was Lake County Sheriff’s K-9 Dax with his handler, Deputy John Forlenza. The team began to track Perez.

Dax quickly found the gun that belonged to Perez in a bush outside of the hotel. Shortly thereafter, Dax located the suspect hiding in a dumpster in an adjacent parking lot.

Perez refused to surrender so Dax bit him. The place Dax decided to bite was Perez’ arm. The suspect was then taken into custody by officers and taken to a local hospital for the bite wound and a leg injury incurred during the jump from the window.

Perez has been charged with resisting arrest, aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. He is currently being held in the Lake County Jail awaiting a court hearing.
