On Friday, a fatal hit and run accident occurred involving a motorist and a bicycle rider. The deceased bicyclist has now been identified as Deerfield Public Schools District 109 board member Maureen Wener.
Around 12:30pm, Highland Park Police responded to the call at the intersection of Deerfield and Piccadilly roads. Wener was transported to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and pronounced dead. The motorist had fled the scene before police arrived.
The preliminary autopsy indicated blunt force trauma as the cause of death.
Wener was well known throughout the community, having served as Deerfield Library Trustee and elected to the District 109 school board in 2021.
